I have always wondered about the multiple Giants but never looked it up. Apparently they are related, but only because they were acquired by the same company. They just seem to be grocery chains in neighboring markets that had the same name. I also looked up Giant Eagle. It's also seemingly unrelated, and started as Eagle but then added on "Giant" after an acquisition of a large chain (that was named OK, not Giant).
It is confusing. There's also Stop & Shop in the Northeast, which was folded into the Giant-Landover division (the one we have in the DC area.) They all use the same store brand (with no name, just a logo), though the individual store logos and décor packages are distinct. Funny enough, my parents had a Stop & Shop gift card from an NJ location years ago, and it is exactly the same card as the modern Martin's discount card (Martin's being a division of the *other* Giant based in PA, not the one that now owns Stop & Shop!) I could probably write a whole post on the Giants....
