Nice perspective getting to the standard bottom lines:
street parking should not be free.
parking should never be mandated
parking fees might (?) act as pseudo road use and congestion charges in certain places

This post just reminded me to write to my city councilmember to oppose residential parking permits. Those really annoy me - local residents who claim exclusive use of the public streets in front of their houses.
