The whole intersection is interesting -- the shopping center on the NE corner is a classic art deco building. Might actually be registered now. Guessing the cause of the road kerfuffle in the early 60s was the beltway getting built.
There are semi-detached houses (built in the 1930s) on Columbia Pike in Arlington that were converted to businesses over the years. Some have been barely altered, and some had additions that swallowed up the old house but on aerial photos you can still see the gabled roofline of the old house poking out over the flat roof of ten commercial addition.
