Interesting thoughts- great read! Although most pandemic Christmas songs will never be remembered, the sheer volume of it is striking. Take the 1980 Iran Histage crises: As far as I can tell, only 2 topical Christmas songs were written on this situation that gripped the nation for over a year (Emerick's "Where Is Captivity?" being the best). From 2020 alone, I've been listening to the approximately 10 hours of Christmas pandemic songs I've found so far. Each one a cultural time capsule, and the volume of songs gives insight into all walks of life from that moment in time. The combination of a world crises (vs a national one), and the technology that let people record cheaply from home is reflected on this trove of songs.
Interesting thoughts- thank you for this.
