I love this! For more crazy hillside corner action, here's a somewhat more grand version in Newcastle upon Tyne, Milburn House. I love the contrast between the two settings; I expect the grandiose in a city that was a cradle of the industrial revolution, less so in the US rust belt. Thanks for sharing!

We’ve got a lot of buildings like that in Knoxville, TN (might be a bit further from the Appalachias than Appalachia, VA), especially on UTs campus. The student union has three “ground floor” entrances, my old dorm and current building two, and I’m sure Neyland stadium has many

How fascinating but also worthwhile this wonderful tour is. So many pockets of humanity to discover lived - and still live - in plain sight. My guess on that large building is that it may have been a factory that sustained many of that one-time 3,000 population.

Interesting to compare this to the giant pupusa from the earlier post. Were I a resident of either place, I imagine I would take very different sorts of pride in each thing. I would appreciate the distinctive building and share that appreciation with my neighbors, having no expectation that it would mean anything to outsiders. The pupusa, on the other hand, feels externally-directed.
